Imago Relationship Theory & Therapy

Imago therapy is based on the work of Harville Hendrix PhD and his partner Helen LaKelly  Hunt PhD.  Developed in the 1980s, Imago Relationship Theory is based on the belief that experiences in childhood relationships impact and influence the experiences in adult relationships. By understanding how negative experiences and feelings from childhood carry over into adult relationships, you can better understand your reactions to your partner, and vice versa.  The work of Imago Therapy is to support each partner in developing their innate empathy to access the transformative nature within.  The goal of Imago Therapy is to help couples become more understanding and empathetic.   Imago is a research based approach to couples counseling.  One study, published in the January 2017 issue of Journal of Couple and Relationship Therapy, found that marital satisfaction increased significantly for couples who completed 12 sessions of Imago relationship therapy.

Harville Hendrix PhD, Helen LaKelly Hunt PhD, imago relationship theory & therapy,

Imago Relationship Therapy is an approach to couples counseling and coaching that facilitates bonding communication and rediscovering the ability to work out the differences. and reduce conflict.  Much of the work n Imago therapy involves learning to recognize how early childhood experiences impact adult relationships and how we see the world.

Imago Relationship therapy can benefit couples who want to improve their relationship and become closer.  It can benefit individuals in understanding themselves and preparing for future relationships as well as better their relationships in general.  Couples and individuals benefit from the development of communication skills, self-awareness, and greater sensitivity to the needs of others through Imago Relationship Therapy.

The Getting The Love You Want couples workshop is the intellectual property of Imago Relationships International.  There are about 200 trained and Certified Imago Getting the Love You Want Workshop Presenters licensed to offer this workshop around the world.  It often takes the form of weekends away from home, where couples learn exercises and dialogues specifically designed to facilitate and improve meaningful dialogue, explore emotions, encourage reconnection on a deeper level and ultimately help gain a new vision of their relationship and their partners.  After, or in lieu of, attending group workshops, couples may seek individual counseling with a Certified Imago Therapist. In Imago therapy, couples usually sit facing each other and participate in dialogues guided by a trained and Certified Imago Therapist.  Many therapists have taken some Imago Training and list themselves as having had that training.  It is important to note that a Certified Imago Therapist has been through a year long certification process which includes 3 modules of 4 day training units followed by 6 months of ongoing supervision of their work with couples and submission of an appropriate video session.  Therefore not all therapists who say they have had Imago training are Certified Imago Therapists.  Imago Certified therapists who continue Imago Training and Consultation beyond their initial certification training can earn the title of Advanced Clinician.
